Cities & the Dead 4

Argia

Tap the field to hear a door · the cut to move the section

What makes Argia different from other cities is that it has earth instead of air.

Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, trans. William Weaver (1974)

Note

In Argia the streets are completely filled with dirt, clay crams the rooms to the ceiling, on every stair another stair is set in negative, over the roofs of the houses hang layers of rocky terrain like skies with clouds. From up here nothing can be seen; some say it is down there, and at night, putting your ear to the ground, you can sometimes hear a door slam.

In the scene the earth is a block of strata, and the city is only its absence: streets, rooms, stairs, a square, voids within the clay. A section plane slowly crosses the block, and the plan of Argia appears and disappears slice by slice.

Touch the field: somewhere down below a door slams, and the blow spreads through the earth. Touch the cut face to push the section deeper.
