In the twin Eusapias, there is no longer any way of knowing who is alive and who is dead.
Note
To make the leap from life to death less abrupt, the people of Eusapia built underground an identical copy of their city, where the dead carry on the occupations they wished for. A hooded brotherhood goes down and brings back news: the dead make changes, and the living, not to be outdone, imitate them. So the Eusapia of the living copies its underground copy.
In the scene the ground is a thick slab, cut clean: on top the town of the living, beneath it, on its own floor, the copy lit by lanterns. Changes always happen below first: a light rises through the shaft, and a moment later the house above does the same.
Touch a house below: it changes at once, and the news goes up. Touch a house above: it tries to change on its own, hesitates, and settles back as it was, until the copy has decided for it.
