At Melania, every time you enter the square, you find yourself caught in a dialogue.
Note
In Melania’s square the dialogue never breaks off: the braggart soldier and the parasite, the prodigal son and the courtesan, the miserly father. Return years later and the same dialogue is going on, but the speakers have changed: they have died, and others have taken their parts. The population renews itself; the roles remain, and not everyone knows which will fall to them.
In the scene the roles are standing stones in a ring around the square, each with its own profile. A bead of light passes the line from stone to stone, following a script that never ends. The stones age, crack and sink, and in their place a new one rises with the same profile; the line is never late.
Touch a stone: its actor gives up the place at once, and the dialogue does not miss a beat. Touch the paving to see, for a moment, the whole script drawn in the air.
