Laudomia, like every city, has at its side another city whose inhabitants are called by the same names.
Note
Beside Laudomia lies the Laudomia of the dead, the cemetery. But Laudomia also has a third city: that of the unborn. Its places are empty and without limit; the living go there to question it, to learn whether they are there. The Laudomia of the dead grows, that of the living does not, that of the unborn has no end, and whoever looks at it feels at once their own smallness and a vertigo.
In the scene the town of the living, always with the same number of houses, lies between a precinct of stones growing row by row and a field of pale points running to the horizon. From time to time a point leaves the field and becomes a house, while the oldest house goes and a new stone rises in the precinct.
Touch the field, and the points around light up in a widening wave: the living questioning the unborn. Touch a house to see its thread: the point it came from, and the stone it will be.
