The places have mingled.
Note
Years ago, in Cecilia, Marco met a goatherd who could tell pastures apart by their grass but could not recognise cities. Years later, lost among streets all alike, he finds him again, still driving his goats along the walls: Cecilia has grown so much that it covers the pastures, and no one knows any longer where they are. City and countryside are the same place.
In the scene the city spreads over a green plain, square by square, until only scattered grass courtyards remain between the walls, then only one. A dotted line, the herd’s way, keeps looking for a path from one green to the next. And all the while a band of pasture rolls back through the streets, as the goatherd sees them: the houses sink into grass as it passes and rise again behind it.
Touch a house: for a moment it remembers the pasture that lay beneath it, and the grass rises back through it. Touch a meadow: for this round it holds out, and the path goes that way.
