Your gaze scans the streets as if they were written pages: the city says everything you must think.
Note
You walk for days among trees and stones, and the eye stops only on what is a sign of something else: a print in the sand means the tiger. In Tamara the streets are thick with signboards jutting from the walls: pincers for the tooth-drawer’s house, a tankard for the tavern, halberds for the guardhouse, scales for the greengrocer.
The scene is a single street, up from the gate: the signs sway on their iron brackets as if a breeze were climbing the street, and they crowd the sky so that the houses can hardly be seen.
Touch a sign: every sign that says the same thing answers it, like a city repeating its own discourse. Touch a wall: the signs turn edge-on, and behind them there is only a featureless white. You leave Tamara without having discovered it.
