Hidden Cities 2

Raissa

Tap a window to start a thread

In Raissa, the sad city, there also runs an invisible thread that binds one living being to another for a moment, then unravels.

Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, trans. William Weaver (1974)

Note

In Raissa life is not happy: people wring their hands, curse, children cry. And yet in Raissa, at every moment, there is a child in a window laughing at a dog that has jumped onto a shed to bite a piece of polenta dropped by a mason, and so on: a chain of small happy events, one setting off the next. In the sad city there is a happy city unaware of its own existence.

In the scene the city is a narrow grey street, tall houses, many windows. Warm sparks hop from window to window, from balcony to balcony, dozens of them, and each window lights up for an instant; the city opens laced with threads that then unravel, but some are always running.

Touch a window or a wall to start another thread. When several run at once, the grey city warms a little, without knowing it.

Quotations are brief excerpts for the purpose of commentary. The full text is available in published editions. The Cities of Ottavia, Valdrada & the soundtrack are inspired by "Monument Valley" from ustwo games.
