Millions of eyes look up at windows, bridges, capers, and they might be scanning a blank page.
Note
Whoever arrives in Phyllis delights in its bridges, each different from the others, in its windows of every style, its pavements of endless patterns. But whoever stays sees Phyllis fade: the eye follows only the lines that lead it where it must go, and everything else is erased. Countless are the Phyllises that elude the gaze of those who live there.
In the scene every house and every bridge has its own novelty. What you look at, at the centre of your gaze, slowly empties into a smooth white without windows; what you turn your eyes from, out of the frame, recovers a little.
Touch a house or a bridge and look at it again as if for the first time: the ornament blooms back, and a light crosses the bridge. Then habit resumes its work.
