Trading Cities 2

Chloe

Tap a passer-by to make them meet

A voluptuous vibration constantly stirs Chloe, the most chaste of cities.

Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, trans. William Weaver (1974)

Note

In Chloe the people who meet in the streets are strangers. Seeing one another, each imagines a thousand things: meetings, conversations, surprises, caresses, bites. No one greets anyone; eyes lock for a second, then dart away. If the inhabitants lived their ephemeral dreams, every phantom would become a person, and the carousel of fantasies would stop.

The scene is a grid of quiet streets, shutters closed. The passers-by are lamps; each time two pass, a small piece of imagined architecture draws itself in lines of light in the air between them (a stair, a balcony, an arbour, a bridge), stands for a moment and dissolves without ever touching them. The air over Chloe is always half full of these unbuilt scenes.

Touch a passer-by: they and the nearest one stop, and their scene is completed and stays. Around that one story the others go out, and for a while Chloe falls silent.

Quotations are brief excerpts for the purpose of commentary. The full text is available in published editions. The Cities of Ottavia, Valdrada & the soundtrack are inspired by "Monument Valley" from ustwo games.
