The city of Zenobia is wonderful in this fashion: though set on dry terrain it stands on high pilings.
Note
No one remembers why Zenobia was built this way: platforms and balconies at every height, on stilts that cross each other, linked by ladders and hanging walkways, crowned with belvederes, water barrels, weather vanes and pulleys. Beneath it, only dry ground.
Calvino says it is pointless to ask whether Zenobia is a happy or an unhappy city. Cities divide into those that through the years go on giving form to their desires, and those in which desires either erase the city or are erased by it.
Zenobia belongs to the first kind. Touch the empty air beside the city, and a new platform will grow up to meet it: every desire finds its stilts.
