Clarice, the glorious city, has a tormented history.
Note
Clarice has declined and flourished many times. The survivors rebuilt it from its rubble: a Corinthian capital became a hen coop, the fragment of a statue the rim of a well; then splendour returned, and the old pieces were set aside for other uses. Of the first Clarice nothing certain is known; Clarice is always Clarice, made of the same shards differently arranged.
In the scene the same forty pieces of stone pass through four ages: a precinct of columns, a field of ruins, a village of pens and benches, a new splendour unlike the first. Each piece keeps gilded the face it had in the first Clarice, and ends up turned every which way.
Touch a piece to see the chain of its roles: where it stood in each age, joined by a dotted thread. Touch the ground to pass at once to the next age.
